Cameron Blows and Ready, Steady, Caught!

This week has been full of drama and it's barely even halfway through! As depicted in my above cartoon, Westminster and the SNP have had a war of words over Scottish Independence, in which a referendum is now due to be held in Scotland in 2014, despite Cameron's best attempts to blow his authoritative bagpipes in demand for it to be held much earlier.

Despite this drama, it is nowhere near my favourite story of the week thus far, that place has been earned deservedly by a certain celebrity chef, a Ready, Steady, Crook if you will. I am of course talking about Antony Worrall Thompson (pictured below), who was caught shoplifting cheese and wine from his local Tesco. This story firstly reminded me of how farcical the juxtaposition of the words 'Celebrity' and 'Chef' are to me. It's one of the most mundane jobs there is, I don't understand the fascination. However, this is probably because my cookery skills are comparable to a mule at reproducing: useless. And to be fair, cooking was apparently essential to our evolution; primitive chefs, like the Homo-Ramsey-Erectus for example, began cooking their grub, thus saving time chomping on hard foods.

Having said all this, I still don't understand why there are SO many TV chefs, although it appears that the certain one in question wasn't getting enough attention (I hadn't seen him on anything since I'm A Celebrity...)

His motives were nonsensical, even to him I think, and since being caught he's apologised for his acts and is seeking medical help, because remember; when a celebrity goes on a crime spree it's the doings of psychological demons and we must lay them on the couch and sympathise. Apparently Worral Thompson has been "sobbing himself to sleep" too since the ordeal...Poor man, he's probably having terrible nightmares as well once he's dropped off after all that cheese intake.

Here is my cartoon in response to Rupert Murdoch joining Twitter, which provoked much divided opinion from the Twitter community.

Maybe some users who didn't approve were in fear that this could be the start of a Twitter transition where hierarchy takes over. If this were to be the case, my prediction is that what was once an egalitarian social network could take a dramatic shift and become dominated by aristocracy, where those at the top of the food chain, like Murdoch, have minions instead of followers.

This could then lead to an extreme capitalist Twitter in which the everyday Twitter account holder must endure hard strenuous labour trends in order to Twitter feed their family/followers. I then foresee the '@' being replaced by the dollar symbol, and maybe the hashtag (#) being replaced by the asterisk (*) - a pompous symbol often used to explain things beyond the understanding of the common man.

Protests will then begin over the controversial debate over why a man who has been working all day is only allowed 150 characters; all hell breaks loose and some entrepreneurs start to ponder new theories to try and overthrow Twitter, such as keeping irrelevant things to yourself altogether. I predict Murdoch's reign of Twitter terror may come to a dramatic climax when his minions begin retweeting others people's direct messages.

By now I realise I've digressed slightly, I think my hypothesis is highly unlikely and maybe, just maybe, this new Twitter account will just be some old coot's occasional ramblings about what he's doing in his leisure time and updates about his fictitious news channel.

A piece I've contributed to the Tate-sponsored exhibition "Emblem of my work", at the Shandy Hall gallery, to celebrate Laurence Sterne's marbled page in the Tristram Shandy novel. 169 artists/writers contributed to the exhibition including Martin Rowson, Ralph Steadman, Quentin Blake and Tom Gauld.

My description for this image is that my mind constantly has ideas ticking over at a rapid rate... The challenge is to pluck the rare ones that aren't completely farcical, for that 'Eureka' moment.

Cartoon for today's Guardian (25.04.2011) - As well as the title, it was also a comment on the ongoing rift in the coalition, including a spat between Cameron and Clegg on whether internships are a good idea (Clegg - No, Cameron -Yes). I have a formula for editorial, satirical cartooning that I like to use, after being influenced by many before me, where the gag system should be like a 'Where's Wally', with one big joke (or in this case, two big Wollys) that's easy to find as people may only give it a brief glance when flicking through the paper, but then cramming in many different satirical finds around the image, making it overall more enthralling to a viewer, I think.

I made these paper toys for an exhibition with the theme of the budget cuts. The models are a parody of our obscure hybrid government, each with a satirical use. It is this usefulness of the toys I feel is a contradiction to the actual politicians, plus they look funny, which is very true to the actual politicians. I compiled the templates for these paper toys into a limited edition signed and numbered set of books. If you wish to purchase one, please contact me at benjerjin@hotmail.com. First page of a three-page strip I've done for a war anthology (due to be published soon... more info later) that is a compilation of comic strips and cartoons by underground artists on the subject of war. It contains some true accounts and general stories of war, some humorous and satirical, and some serious (like this one). I just did the artwork for the story. The story itself is quite simple and doesn't have many twists and turns, but it is a true account, which I feel makes it more compelling.

Scenes from 'The Big Draw: Battle of the Cartoonists'

I was lucky enough to be selected to work alongside and compete against some of the best cartoonists in the UK (and therefore the world!) at The Big Draw 2010 in Battle of the Cartoonists. I was on The Guardian's team, due to my previous cartoon work for them, and the theme was "Make your mark on the future", in which teams had to make the funniest banner (4 metres wide, 1 metre tall). Unfortunately Private Eye won (decided by a young cartoon connoisseur called Lily, between the ages of 4-6 years old I'd say)... but altogether t'was a good laugh. "Ben Jennings on Tony Blair's A Journey and Iraq"

Cartoon published in Thursday 2nd September's issue of The Guardian. This cartoon comments on President Obama announcing that America's combat troops have left Iraq, with the quote "Now it's time to turn the page"... I linked this with the same day's story about the release of Blair's memoirs, focusing on his comments on Iraq. I used newspaper clippings to display some of Blair's quotes from the book on the war, I also managed to manipulate some of the text into things I wanted to say, such as:

1. "War, what is it? Fighting"

2. "Iraq, no mission accomplished"

3. "Blair failed Iraq"

4. (About Blair) "Despite admitting this error, he says he was a selfish B..." The rest is covered up by Obama's right thumb. And 'B' can be the start to whatever word you want to call Blair... I very nearly put 'cu' but then bottled it!

5. "Farewell", the last word of the page in focus. Ambiguous in the way that personally I put it there to say goodbye to Guardian readers, as it was my last cartoon for the paper (for a while at least) as Steve Bell was due to return. Although I also thought it could be USA saying "See ya later" to Iraq basically.

Published in The Guardian on 11th August 2010. Inspired by Britain's top GP (Professor Steve Field) saying that Briton's aren't looking after themselves, and therefore are costing the NHS more money. I saw this as an opportunity to portray Britain's current government health as a whole (sorry)... with references to excessive budget cuts, heavy deficit, false promises, Nick Clegg being not just behind Cameron in the House of Commons but up his behind, as well as rifts in the coalition (Clegg is pushed to one side), plus a few Carry On style, typically British immaturity and puns. Overall, Britain is currently not looking too healthy... dark times, as the skeleton diagram/Grim Reaper might suggest.

'Mad, bad and dangerous' is how Tony Blair described Gordon Brown, revealed by Lord Mandelson in his memoirs. Blair also described Brown as 'beyond redemption' and said he behaved like he was part of the Mafiosi (hence The Untouchables parody). A plan to reduce some of Brown's power as chancellor was drawn up whilst Blair was Prime Minister, when proposed to Brown, he said 'no'. Blair apparently feared Brown.
